Make plans to visit the Living Well Fair prior to the start of the Symposium on Thursday, October 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Milwaukee. A variety of literature, resources and free health screenings will be offered.
1. Blood Pressure
2. Bone Density
The Achilles InSight is a bone ultrasonometer that uses high frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to evaluate bone status in the heel. If the results of this screening are other than normal, the recommendation is to consult with a Health Care Provider to determine the next steps, usually the DEXA x-ray of the hip and spine (the definitive diagnostic procedure for osteoporosis).
There are some people who should NOT have this screening. They are:
= Anyone under the age of 20
= Anyone with cuts, abrasions or open skin on the foot being screened
= Anyone currently under the care of a physician for osteoporosis or taking medication for osteoporosis
3. Body Mass Index Percentage
4. Body Fat Measurement
5. Dental Health
6. Visual Acuity Testing
Visual acuity tests are used to evaluate eyesight. The Snellen Test checks your ability to see at distances. It uses a wall chart that has several rows of letters. The letters on the top row are the largest; those on the bottom row are the smallest. Participants will stand 20 feet from the chart and cover one eye and then read the smallest row of letters they can see on the chart. Each eye is tested separately and then together.
7. Audiometer Hearing Test
An audiometer hearing test is administered to a person by having them sit in a quiet area with a set of headphones over the ears, which is connected to an audiometer. The audiometer produces tones at specific frequencies and set levels to each ear independently. The technician plots the loundess on an audiogram. The person having their hearing tested will convey that they have heard the tone by raising their hand. As the test progresses, the technician plots points on a graph where the frequency is on the x-axis and the loudness on the y-axis. Once each frequency of normal hearing ability is tested and plotted, the points are joined by a line so that one can see at a glance the frequencies a person is not hearing normally and to what degree the hearing loss is.
A flu shot clinic will also be offered. Cost for a flu shot is $25.
