Dr. Joye Carter
Chief Forensic Pathologist, Marion County Coroner's Office, Indianapolis, Indiana

Joye M. Carter, MD is a triple board certified physician who has specialized in the field of Forensic Pathology.  She is a graduate of Howard University College of Medicine and Wittenberg, respectively.  She is a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Dr. Carter first made history when she became the first graduate of Howard University to achieve board certification in Forensic Pathology and then when she became the first African American to be appointed a Chief Medical Examiner in the United States in 1992.  Dr. Carter made history again when she became the first female to be appointed Chief Medical Examiner in the history of the state of Texas where she served as Chief Medical Examiner of Harris County (Houston) from 1996 until 2002.  Read more

Ms. Sandy Dukat
Medal Winner, United States Paralympic Ski Team, Vail, Colorado

Sandy Dukat has competed against able-bodied athletes her whole life even though she only has one leg.  However, a whole new world opened up for her when she discovered disabled sports.

Sandy joined the swim team at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in 1996 and before long was swimming with the US Disabled Swim Team.  She set an American record in the 800-meter freestyle at the 1998 Disabled Swimming World Championships and was elected co-captain of the U.S. Team.

Today, Sandy competes as a world-class skier and member of the U.S. Paralympic Ski Team.  It was a 1997 trip to The Hartford Ski Spectacular, the nation's largest ski event for people with disabilities, which sparked Sandy's interest in winter sports.  Read more


Dr. Gary Gunderson
Senior Vice President for Health and Welfare Ministries, Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare, Memphis, Tennessee; Director of the Interfaith Health Program (IHP) of the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia

Gary Gunderson's two leadership roles focus on building the capacity of religious institutions to advance health and wholeness.  Since the Interfaith Health Program (IHP) began at The Carter Center in 1992, Gunderson has explored the confluence of health and faith by working with an international network of community leaders and multi-disciplinary scholars.  He is the author of several books, notably Deeply Woven Roots and Boundary Leaders (Fortress Press, 1997 and 2004), many articles and hundreds of speeches and presentations to religious and science groups.  His book, Leading Causes of Life, with Larry Pray, was published in 2006 (Center for Excellence in Faith and Health). 

Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare is one of the largest health systems in the United States with 10,000 employees, seven hospitals and a complex array of services and community partnerships. It is owned by the United Methodist Conferences of Memphis, Mississippi and Arkansas.  The Health and Welfare Division is responsible for the continuum of pastoral services which include those offered inside the walls as well as through partnerships with congregations and community partners.  The division works closely with the United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries by coordinating several of its national networks of health ministries and cooperates in international ministries in Africa and Russia.  Read more

The Rev. John Nunes
President, Lutheran World Relief, Baltimore, Maryland

John Nunes is president and CEO of Lutheran World Relief, an international relief and development agency working in 35 countries. A prominent Lutheran leader known for his powerful voice applying theological insight to matters from global vocation to urban ministry in the United States, Nunes joined LWR in July 2007.

In his more than 25 years as a speaker, musician, writer, youth director, pastor and professor, Nunes has gained experience and expertise ranging from offering cultural commentary to teaching incarnational spirituality to lecturing on postcolonial poetry. He has given keynote addresses at both scholarly conferences and youth gatherings of 40,000 participants. His book, Voices from the City (1999, Concordia Publishing House), attempts to capture the complex challenges of poverty, crime, and multicultural ministry.  Read more
